    Cannot Lose Weight

I have seen numerous doctors and not one can tell me what the issue is. To start, I have high testosterone, but not high estrogen. One of my doctors considered PCOS, but ruled it out and called it an adrenal problem. He put me on dexamethasone which lowered my testosterone, but caused me to gain 40+ pounds. Needless to say I stopped seeing the doctor and taking the medicine about a year ago.
I work out 5 times a week on average, doing 50-70 miles on a spin bike at a relatively high resistance. I drink protein shakes, eat sliced meat and occasionally cheese and eggs and salads. Typically I eat between 1300-1500 calories a day.
I'm a 5'6 female at 220 pounds. However, I look a lot less than I weigh. I have a lot of muscle (probably due to the high testosterone) and I'm in really good shape. My weight sits in my thighs and butt mostly.
Anyone have any suggestions or possible reasons why I can't lose weight?

In other words, stop eating altogether.

Really intelligent advise: has to work as far as weight control goes, however!

I am suspicious of your numbers. Granted, some folks have a lower metabolic rate than others, but even 1500 calories per day is pretty light. On top of that, you say you are burning off approximately 1400-1600 calories/day on that bike. (I got those numbers from what I do, so they are just a guide for you.) Are you sure you are only eating 1500 cals? The intake and output puts you on about a 00 calorie, net, diet on your workout days. Sorry, but that ain't possible.... for most people. Suggestion: write down everything you eat and drink for two weeks, then look up the calories in it all. Give yourself two weeks so you don't fudge around; just be yourself. All that said, some people have a metabolic issue where they can put on fat with severely restricted intakes. If you are at wit's end in a few weeks, I'd see and endocrinologist. Good luck.

As I said, " The intake and output puts you on about a 00 calorie, net, diet on your workout days. "

I'm in this same boat. For many years the doctors have been trying to figure out how to treat this. I have never been thin my whole life but always hiked, ridden bicycles, swam, etc... I was always a very toned overweight person. They know that it is a hormonal issue, but apparently there is still research being done on it. When I had my kids, I would drop 50 pounds easy because my hormones would be normal. About a year after each child was born I could feel the symptoms coming back and the weight coming back no matter what did. I wish I was an overeater! I could fix that! An endocrinologist told me that my body hoards calories because it doesn't get the message that it is not starving. I can't overeat even if I wanted to because I have almost daily nausea that goes along with whatever this is. I also have some patients that have these same issues. It is very frustrating to those of us with this issue to keep having people telling us to control our eating and be honest about what we are eating! Sorry we don't fit the logical norm, but what we need is others who want to help us find some answers. No one "likes" to be overweight!!!

I have a problem with weight control. I'm 82 kgs at the age of 37 and height of 5'4''. I am a pure vegetarian.
      • Csugit made me spit the coffee out my mouth.....saying “control your mind and your mouth!” That’s not an understatement. I have the same battle. Love meat and fish, love bread and butter. I do take B12 shots in addition to oral B-complex Tabs, omega, vitamin D, but still battling losing 22lbs. I’m definitely not consistent so that’s my issue. I’m 5’10 and 192lbs. On thyroid meds too so I’m sure this affects my ability to lose weight. Great advice though. I’d add drink so much water, minimum of 2 gallons daily. It’all make you eat less!

    RE: Cannot Lose Weight

Have you had your thyroid checked? Are you drinking water? Also avoid ALL SUGAR, including natural sugar from fruit & avoid carbs (bread, noodles, white potatoes, rice).
Thyroid is another possibility. But, unless there is a physiological reason, like severe diabetes, I see no point in avoiding all sugar and carbs completely. Eat them is minimal quantities, but avoiding them, I feel, puts too much emotional stress on the brain. "Minimal" junk food (generally high in refined sugar and/or salt, the feel-good stuff) means a couple mouthfuls a day, NOT two pieces of pie and french fries. Once the weight is down, a tad more can be tolerated IF one feels it is necessary. Just my 2 cents.

Have you been checked for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome?

    RE: Cannot Lose Weight

Have you been tested for 'Metabolic Syndrome'? Once I turned 40 (after having a hysterectomy and 3 kids later) I started gaining weight like crazy and no matter what I did, what I ate, etc. it didn't matter-I just kept gaining weight. I FINALLY found a dr. That listened to me and ran some blood work and found out that I had 'metabolic syndrome'. Technically you only have to have 3 out of 5 factors, but I had 4-these factors when you have them make your body shut down and nothing works together like it should. Once we figured out that this was what was wrong the dr treated it with medications and the weight started coming off!!! I was able to do 'clean eating' and eventually lost around 77 lbs. Just might be something worth checking out. I went for years telling my husband that something was wrong and he just kept telling me that I needed to workout harder and eat better! I thought it was all in my mind-and it wasn't!!!! Don't give up until you find an answer-even if this isn't your answer. Best of luck!

Anon: Thanks for the name; I had forgotten it when I mentioned, above, the "metabolic issue" some people have. Real bummer, too.

    RE: Cannot Lose Weight

Dear Can't Lose Weight, What other symptoms do you have? Google: "symptoms of hypothyroidism." See how many of these symptoms you recognize in yourself. If you feel there's a chance you may have a thyroid that is not working properly, schedule an appointment with an endocrinologist. A quick blood test will reveal if the problem is a waning thyroid. Don't mess around with this. Metabolism is very important! Insist that no matter who the doctor is or what his/her specialty is, that he/she writes lab orders for TSH, T3, Free T3,
T4 and free T4 be checked. Don't stop at TSH!

    RE: Cannot Lose Weight

Urge you to go to an endocrinologist and get a complete thyroid examination. Skip your primary physician----go to a specialist! Be aware that there are different kinds of hypothyroidism, i.e., Hashimoto (auto immune). Then go to a Registered Diatician who will teach you how to eat a well rounded, healthy program. You will lose weight, but it will be slow, like a couple of pounds p/mth, BUT, with your muscle and exercise, you may luck out and lose faster. Please do not try fad diets, quick solutions and restrictive eating----not good!

    RE: Cannot Lose Weight

Hi there, there is a great phone app called Myfitnesspal. You log in all of your exercise and every single thing you put in your mouth. Lots of people exercise and eat right but they dont know proper portions. I went out and bought a scale to really learn my portions. When you grocery shop, shop all the outside rows of the store. No processed meats, cheeses, frozen foods. No lowfat, fat free as they are loaded with sodium, fillers, sugars. Whole foods is great. Im in a situation where I have suddenly gained 31lbs in 3 mos! My workout and diet hasnt changed in any form. I got referred to an endocronologist. What it turned out to be is that I unfortunately incurred two back to back severe concussions. They in turn affected my hypothalmus, pituatary and hormones. It also affected my bodys natural diuretic process. That is what I noticed 1st-holding fluids really bad. If your dr wont send you to an endo Dr, then push for a good Internist. Internists love to roll up their sleeves to get to the root of a persons health situation. Use that exercise and food tracker-you can show your Dr. Have you had your sugar and A1C checked, or been checked for prediabetes or insulin resistence? Check all your meds for ALL the side effects including the uncommon and rare ones. Then check them against each other for possible interactions. Good luck:)

    RE: Cannot Lose Weight

I think that protein drinks: make sure they don't have so much protein/like over 15 because then you will be putting on more muscle. Men need more than women. If it has salt/which it does maybe you are retaining salt. You need to look at how many protein drinks you are drinking daily! If you are trying to go down quickyl;then it would be 2 with 2 snacks consiting of protein & a vegaetable or fruit. Then a normal dinner consisting mostly 300-400 calories & don't eat after 8:00 p.m. It's nice to just drink protein for breakfast & put vegetables/spinsch or kale - only 1/2 fruit & a frozen bannana with maybe chia/1 tablespoon into it. It's like having ice cream for breakfast/very healthy.Eat foods that have alot of water in it, like homemade soups tofill you up when you need to binge. And eat more vegetables than grains. Remeber that a healthy diet is 1-2 oz. protein at breakfats,2-3 at lunch, and 3-4 at dinner. Then it's 1 oz. in the 2 snavcks. 5 vegetables daily/ where 2 1/2 cups is raw/beyong lettuce & tomaotes. 3-4 fuits daily, and healthy fats at every regular meal. When you are over weight; always drink 10 glasses of water too. not drinking enough water always makes you retain. Just make sure you stop before 8:00 p.m.; other wise you will be up all nite. i hope this helped you.
