How do I get toned muscles without bulking up?

I'm trying to build defined, lean muscles. I don't want to bulk up, just get stronger and more toned. What's the best way to do this? I've been doing squats and some light weights plus cardio but I don't feel like I'm getting anywhere. I don't want to have to hire a trainer but I feel like maybe I don't know enough to get started on my own. Anyone have any suggestions of routines I can follow? I've heard good things about hiit routines.

    Here's something I once read ...
You've never heard of a pro athlete saying, "I don't wanna practice cuz I'll get too good."
Keep working out! You know it's gonna pay off! Don't worry about bulking up.

Do you swim? I do water aerobics and free swim. I am toning nicely and have lost 47 lbs. Swimming is great for toning. In my particular class we also use water weights. I do a 45 minute class and swim for thirty minutes at least 5 times a week.

RE: How do I get toned muscles without bulking up?

Now day we have several options to get free training online just by following some people online via FB, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram. I use to have that fear once in my 30's however my ex-husband was a great trainer. Your body gets used to what you are doing so your have to change up every now and again by either reps. So you might start out at 10 reps x 3 times then move to 15 reps x 3 times or arm curls 8 reps with 5 lbs x 3 times then move to 8 reps at 8 lbs x 3. No worries as long as you are not eating heavily you will not bulk up but you will see definition. I hope this helps.

Lift heavier weights. I assume you are a woman. Women won't typically get bulky from lifting dumbbells. I follow free online workouts from Fitness Blender (the young woman trainer is definitely not bulked up). HIIT is good for cardio rather than toning but Fitness Blender has great workouts that combine HIIT and strength. I round out my fitness regime with water aerobics, yoga, and walking. But I repeat, lift heavier dumbbells. Don't be afraid--you won't get muscle-bound, you'll love the muscle definition and the strength, and as you age your bones will thank you.

Try isotonics...it's resistance exercise. Get some stretch bands (they will need to be heavy duty ).
Try to pump up 10 times or 15 then hold on the last repetition for 7 -10 seconds. I have done this since I was a teenager . It works . Give it about 3 - 5 days and you will notice the results! ....remember the secret is you breathing when you do the excerises. Practice and you will get the feel for it.
    Have fun!

Add an extra pounds every week (if you can),then the end of your workout with yoga. The best exercises that it works for me are walk, weight and free weights every other day, then I finished with yoga. The best is svasana, and the hardest, stay still.
