Hair gray at scalp, turns back to brown as it grows

I began going gray in my 30s, though my first gray hair was discovered when I was 14. This is heredetary. I am now 52 and have not colored my hair in 15 years.

I like my silver waves just fine, but my hair is past my shoulders, and I realized that the bottom of my hair is brown, while it is silver at the top where it grows from my scalp. At some point about halfway down it returns to my original brown color. No matter how many trims/cuts I have had in the past 15 years, I never have the gray hair grow all the way to the end of the strand. I'd experiment with a pixie cut to see where the color exactly starts to return, but that would not be a good look for me, lol.

I can't find anything on the internet about this, though there are cases where gray hair returns to brown at the root. Anyone else heard of this, or understand why the hair could be white, then turn back to brown as it grows?
