Pain radiating from right lower back to foot

In March of this year, I fell and fractured my left knee and femur. A few weeks after the surgery, my lower back started to hurt and by the end of the day, I couldn’t bend over. I assumed the muscles were weak and pt would help. For the past 6 weeks, I have been having excruciating pain starting in my low back on the right side and all the way down to my foot. The pain will get so bad that I can’t get out of bed and the only “comfortable” position is lying on my left side with a pillow in between my legs. Behind my right knee, there is a constant burning feeling that doesn’t stop. When I walk, as I put my fit down to take a step, I will get a jolt of pain down my entire leg. I also get Charley horses only in my right leg when the pain is at its worst. Sometimes the pain goes away for a day or two, but then comes back all of a sudden (literally 0-60) in a matter of minutes. Could this be from the fall or could it be because I have been limping for the past few months? Also, what could the pain be? I just want it to stop, ibuprofen and 10mg of oxycodone helps a little bit...but 4-5 hours later, the pain is at an 8-10. I don’t want a band-aid solution, I will literally do whatever to just make them pain stop.

RE: Pain radiating from right lower back to foot

I think most pain that originates in the lower back and shoots down the leg is related to some kind of damage/injury associated with the sacroiliac joint and sciatic nerve. You have to see an orthopedic doctor to get it diagnosed through an MRI though. Sorry, I can't be of more help with that but try googling it and there are definitely plenty of exercises you can find to try and relieve that pain, if you're unable to go to a doctor, but just be careful, because it could make things worse. In terms of Charley horses, I found when I get them, it's mostly a result of dehydration. They are so annoying- you have to massage it out, but be sure to stay hydrated. That has helped me. Also, if you have a tennis ball or something you can roll your foot over it to help with Charley horses or those kind of foot cramps/spasms. If you do that regularly, it helps even when you're not having them. Hope that helps.

    Hi lizzzard385,

I'm sorry to hear about your injury and pain that you've been experiencing after our surgery. I used to have similar symptoms to yours, although to a lesser degree. I recently found a YouTube video by a physical therapist by the name of Dr. Jacobs. I watched his videos and realize that treating chronic pain needs to be approached holistically. He has multiple videos pertaining to back pain where many patients have had success with alleviating chronic pain. He places an emphasis on the biopsychosocial model to treat pain, which is to correct the multitude of variables that could aggravate your pain (inflammation, nutrition, scar tissue, etc.).

I've attached a link to one of his many videos for back pain below that you can refer to if you're curious:

I hope you get better soon,

Thank you, Albert! I went to the ortho doc who did my femur surgery in March. He said it sounds like sciatica and ordered an MRI to see if I have a herniated disc from the fall that caused my to fracture my knee and femur. He put me on a stronger anti-inflammatory and I’m taking Lyrica. That is helping a little, but I will watch these videos!

RE: Pain radiating from right lower back to foot

Sounds like "Sciatica" and needs medical attention right away. I have it in my left leg. Sciatica affects the extremities, usually only one and is caused from injuries. It may come and go just as you described. Suddenly, and be very painful, burning throbbing,. I have chronic sciatica which feels like horrible charlie horses in the back of my calf, or upper thigh, back or all of it. The areas move around each time.I have to hop around to find a place to sit and put ointment on when it hits. My insurance denied the alternative and proper treatment my pain doctor ordered, (physical therapy, shots etc), but yours doesn't have to be chronic and may be something else entirely. You do not want anything to become chronic. I strongly recommend seeing a doctor so that you can get the correct treatment and feel better. You deserve to not be in pain, no matter what it is.
