Distracted and Impulsive Seeing a doctor soon need advice

Im a 24 year old man. Married almost a year to my beautiful wife. No kids. She brought to my attention recently that I am distracted. Im constantly losing my keys or leaving my wallet or lunch or phone at home. I didnt think much of it. Then I realized when Im home some times she will say "pay attention to me" which got me thinking. I just recently took a new job. Its my 13th job since I started working at 18. She supported me as always but Im good at convincing her and our families its for the better. I tend to start out a new job full force I give 100% with good intentions as time goes on I end up distracted and my performance drops until management is so up set with me that I scramble to find a new job or walk out all together. Then I lie to my wife and our families about why i left because im too embarrased to admit its my fault. I tried college twice after high school flunked both times left me with debt even my senior year i barely scrapped by to graduate I couldnt stand going and sitting in class when i had a brand new car i could go out for a cruise all day. When I was 18 I had my first major impulse buy and bought a new car when i damn well couldnt afford it. Had a reposession when I was 19. And a DUI when I was 20. When I was in grade school the teachers would tell my mom i would leave my head behind if it wasnt attached because i would always leave my back pack or something important at school. My mom only got defensive and never got me help. I dont really have any close friends to lean on. My hobbies change constantly most recently i picked up metal detecting spent hundreds of dollars on gear and its all just sitting in my closet. In social settings I usually just nod my head and say yeah yeah even though i dont have a clue whats being said. I dont like small talk and i wont go out of my way to start it because Im usually not even thinking about the subject being talked about. I knock stuff over drop stuff and i get frustrated at people and inanimate objects even though i know its stupid. It has taken me hours to write this but i needed to. Im not one to talk about my feelings or whats going on inside my head. Another reason why i typed this was to be able to bring it to the doctor. My plan is to see my new primary doctor after april 1st when my new insurance starts I just had a physical and hearing test done but I want to be evaluated before i go see a psychiatrist incase i have a thyroid issue? I guess all I am asking for here is adivce not diagnosis

RE: Distracted and Impulsive Seeing a doctor soon need advice

I appreciate your willingness to share such personal and, undoubtedly, difficult information. I am very intrigued to hear an update about the outcome of your evaluation with the doctor, and or, psychiatrist. I've been dating my current boyfriend for over 2 yrs now, and he displays MANY of the same characteristics that you listed in your post, which have been the reason for a lot of our arguments and heated disagreements. His forgetfulness and obliviousness have not only effected me, but also HIS own life. A good friend of ours has made the same comment regarding his forgetfulness: he would forget or lose his head if it wasn't attached to his body. Whenever I've tried to calmly and rationally talk to my boyfriend about his lack of attention or obliviousness, he usually just gets defensive and sees me as "the bad guy" because he is embarrassed to acknowledge or face these signs. And, then of course, there are times when I'm NOT as patient in my approach with him due to his own stubbornness in the matter. To make a long story short, I'm really interested in hearing what conclusion the doctors come to in terms of a diagnosis. This might help me get through to my boyfriend because he's only rejecting my suspicions and theories...

Thanks for the update. How are you feeling about that?

Confused because i always though of adhd as those kids who bounced off the walls in school. But after research i fit exactly in the diagnoses of adults with it

You might want to consider printing your post and having your doctor read it because he/she will get a lot more for what you said here than what you will remember to say at the appointment. It would probably give your doctor a better idea of who to refer you to if need be.

I can definitely understand how a new diagnosis would be confusing at first but I'm sure it also comes as a relief to know what the problem is so you can begin treatment. I hope that you'll continue to check in with us. Good luck :)
