    Bleeding belly button

I’m a 41-year-old male with a belly button that has been bleeding and very foul-smelling for about two months now. No fever or pain whatsoever. Surgeon is sure that it is originating from inside and skin is normal. CT scan showed nothing abnormal except a tiny fat-containing umbilical hernia. Surgeon wants to repair hernia as a first step, but nothing I’ve read online lists this as a possible cause of umbilical bleeding. Does this make sense? I’d rather not have unnecessary surgery but then if there are no other ideas I feel there’s no other choice. Any thoughts?
