My Chihuahua chews furniture when I leave

I rescued Coco 3 years ago. He's never been destructive until lately. When I leave, I come home to find foam rubber all over the floor and a big hole in my dinning room chair!! My Vet suggested giving him a small amount of Child Benedryl but I don't like the idea of drugging
him. Is there a NON-CHEMICAL way of calming him when I leave?
Is there something I'm doing wrong, or not doing, that makes him so anxious? I'm on a fixed income. HELP PLEASE!

RE: My Chihuahua chews furniture. I forgot to mention that Coco is now 7 years old. He has always been hyper when I leave (separation anxiety) but never THIS bad!!!

There's a spray called Bitter Apple available on Amazon (and probably at pet stores). It's non-toxic and non-staining. My new dog chewed two corners of my sofa off and started chewing my area rugs. Sprayed this stuff on and he hasn't touched them and still hasn't two months after spraying. Seems to last a long time and is very reasonably priced. Does he have a lot of chew toys? Nylabone edible bones are good for dogs that like to chew. They last a long time. Don't buy cheap Chinese toys for him to chew -- many of the dyes and materials they use are very toxic to dogs. When I leave my dog more than two hours I leave the radio on - seems to help with separation anxiety. Someone told me they leave their TV on with the volume kind of low and their dog seemed to find the sound of people's voices soothing. Good luck.
