    RE: Some Fears

As an Experienced Elementary Teacher & Parent of Adult Children, I have had Parents who have told me this or I have I have observed. 1: Gently try to elicit if Fear is coming from himself or External Factors: School, from Classroom; Bullying? Fear of Adult or a Child? Are students behaving well? Is there good Classroom MANAGEMENT? Students should not be UNNECESSARILY Noisy & "Out of Control." Does he fear that he cannot learn as well as others? Request a meeting w. Teacher. Tell of your concerns. Ask if she has any ideas that may contribute to his feelings of Fear. Request a Daily Auto Note (AM&PM) for a month as to Effort, Behavior, his demeanor-- Happy
Sad, Uninterested, Fearful. Do your part to follow up Each day, signing or sending a brief note acknowledging Receipt of Teacher's Note.
OBSERVE AT SCHOOL & AT HOME: (For Safety's Sake, most Schools require that you Register with the Office First before you are allowed on Campus. OBSERVE THE CHILD IN CLASSROOM, ON PLAYGROUND, IN THE LUNCHROOM & GO INTO BATHROOMS FOR A QUICK CHECK FOR ATMOSPHERE. DO ALL UNOBTRUSIVELY WITHOUT HIM & OTHER STUDENTS KNOWING YOU ARE THERE IF POSSIBLE. DO NOT INTERFERE. THIS IS AN OBSERVATION, NOT A TIME TO DO ANYTHING UNLESS IT IS AN AUTHENTIC THREAT TO SAFETY. DO AN UNBIASED UNINTRUSIVE OBSERVATION TO GET A "FEEL FOR THE ENVIRONMENT." WRITE DOWN LIST OF SITUATIONS THAT MIGHT LIKELY MAKE A CHILD OF THAT AGE AFRAID. Are there Fears of going to /coming from school? GOING BY BUS OR WALKING? AGAIN OBSERVE UNOBTRUSIVELY FOR "FEELING OF THE ENVIRONMENT."
DOES SOMETHING FEEL "OFF OR FRIGHTENING?" OBSERVE AT HOME: Is Home orderly, SAFE w. routines of Dinner by 5-6 PM, Bedtime by 7:30 PM, No TV or "Screen Time" within an hour of Bedtime. Be sure to Eliminate any TV or Movies w. Adult or Violent Content.
Does child have feelings of being Left by Parent, Fear of Abandonment, fear for Parent without child? Is child being Bullied at Home by Siblings, Parents or Neighborhood kids?
Is child Fearful of any Adult in the Family or Friend of Family?
Ask gently. Your role is to Listen. Give child a Safe, Quiet place to talk w. You or Someone he says he trusts.
I have observed much from teaching & observation of my Students, their Parents & their Families & my own Children's feelings about their Classroom & School experiences. Is there a recent Divorce, Relocation, Changes in the child's Life? A child who fears at 1st Grade usually has a reason.
    Do not be overbearing.
Be prepared to be honest with yourself. Is there Screaming or Hitting in the Home. Does child feel Safe at Home? At School?
Basically you are trying to ascertain if child's fear is internal or based upon rumour, or External: ENVIRONMENT, School or Home; Adults or another Child.
Good Luck. Hugs for your child.
