How bad is it for baby to wake up frequently at night?

Hi! Our 14-month-old wakes up frequently, and, while we understand more or less how to help him fall asleep and settle himself (for us, gradually and without crying), this takes a long long time. The whole goal of working to help the baby sleep for longer stretches at night is so that he can go through sleep cycles and be healthy, so how bad is it for his development if we take MONTHS to actually succeed in helping him sleep at night? There is so much information out there on how to do one method or the other, but not on...in what time period must a baby sleep to not have troubles later in life.

RE: How bad is it for baby to wake up frequently at night?

My husband and I are dealing with the same thing. We also have a 14 month old that usually wakes up around 3 times a night. We are able to get him back to sleep right away most of the time but sometimes not so quick. Our problem is sleep props; he either wants milk or his pacifier. We purchased the book and program called 'Sleep Sense' and it's been very helpful and informative on how to get your child to sleep through the night. It also tackles sleep props which is what we're working on now. So hopefully by the time I finish reading the info I'll be able to get rid of the milk at least. Good luck!!!

What have you tried in the past?

We have been sort of stalled at trying over and over to get him into the crib more awake and less asleep. Because of our doctor's advice (which we understand helps most babies), we tried relatively brief periods of crying three separate times...which upset him more. So, after I asked here, I checked with our doctor's office again, and it is ok to take some time. We're working through Pantley's methods, and it seems to be helping already! Good luck to you, too!
