    Menopause and Chest Pain

has anyone had "heart attack" symptoms during menopause? They tend to happen around the time I should be getting my period. They are getting worse and worse. I went to the er and had echo and stress echo done along with blood work and all came back negative. They sent me home and told me to follow up with my primary doc. The pain seems to wake me in the wee hours of the morning (3 or 4 am) sometimes it lasts for an hour. Sometimes 3 hours, the last time it lasted on and off for 3 days. The pain is general upper left chest discomfort, pinching in my heart, back pain, neck pain, tightness, pressure, tingling in left arm, warm sensation going across my chest, etc. I will follow up with my primary doc and gyno. I'm going to have them test my hormone level cause I heard low estrogen during menopause can cause these symptoms.

    Dear Kim2951,
This is actually a real problem that a number of women have. Lack of estrogen can actually cause the coronary blood vessels around the heart to contract, and limit blood flow (and then give you chest pain). Do check in with your primary care doc, to make sure that your cardiac evaluation is complete (we don't want to miss anything potentially there.) If everything is fine, you should consult with your gynecologist regarding some estrogen therapy. Some gynecologists are anxious about using estrogen in this situation. If that is the case, you can find a menopause specialist at the website menopause.org, which is the website of the North American Menopause Society-and one of these folks can get you organized with some estrogen therapy. You may also want to go to my website, madameovary.com, for some more menopause education.
    Good luck,
