    Why can't I lose weight?

About a month ago I started an exercise and weight loss regimen. At the time I started I weighed 209 lbs. I STILL weigh that. I have been walking for at least 30 minutes a day and have given up desserts, except for fresh fruit or 2 squares of dark chocolate. I have been eating less fat and fewer carbs, but I'm not starving myself. I have not lost an ounce. About the time I began the diet I got a cortisone shot in my knees because the insurance company had not yet okayed Synvisc. Is it possible that the cortisone is keeping me from losing? When I look back on it I realized that after the first two shots, a year ago and six months ago, I started getting huge in the stomach. I have never had a huge stomach and the weight just came on suddenly. I am also bleeding and bruising very badly at just the slightest bump or scratch. Could that also be a side effect of the steroid shot?

Those shots will definitely make you gain weight. And are you actually tracking your intake? An app like my fitness pal is a good one

You should check out Emilia Hogan on Instagram. Or beyou2befit.com. She helped me lose weight and still be able to actually eat. Just a thought!

RE: Why can't I lose weight?

Hi, I lost 50+ pounds (233 -> 175) in six months and have kept it off for almost three years. I exercised in a very similar way - walking about 3 miles, at a brisk pace, five or more times a week. I used a free app called Runkeeper to keep track of exercise activity. Then, and more importantly, I downloaded and linked another free app, My Fitness Pal (MFP) to keep track of calorie intake. I say it is more important b/c the exercise burns about 320 cals...which I can undo with a single candy bar. So, the exercise was for cardio and general fitness...but the real "heavy lifting" of my weight loss journey was calorie counting. More specifically, I limited myself to 1500 cals/day - I arrived at the number by seeing what count caused me to lose and what count caused me to gain (I weigh and record in MFP app every morning). I also "eat my exercise burn calories", in other words, if I give myself 1500 and exercise 300, I have 1800 allowed for that day. Experts will tell you not to do that, but for me that was an incentive to exercise and...and it has to be a program that works for YOU. That is the only way it can be sustainable. In my opinion, somebody else's program that does not fit YOU becomes a "forced march" and will not pass the test of time...(might be a good point of departure, but adjust to make it work for you). I was so determined to lose that I decided I decided, if I had to count calories for the rest of my life, I'd do it! Three and a half years and I still believe I won't control self well without help...so, I am still counting - everything I eat and drink without fail. I don't miss the foods I gave up, because for the most part, they were bad for my health, in addition to their weight impact. Now, I eat simpler foods that are lower cal and chemical content and THAT I LIKE. My joints are way happier and ache less now that I am not hauling around 50# of extra weight, I am more active and have lowered risks for lots of health problems. In short, for me, the focus, effort and adjustments were worth it. That is MY recipe...good luck finding yours!

Wow! Congratulations on your weight loss and maintaining that weight loss -- which I know can be its own battle! Thank you for sharing your story and everything that worked for you. When I counted calories was the only time I really saw significant weight loss. I've been thinking about getting back into the habit, and your post has given me the motivation to do just that :)

RE: Why can't I lose weight?

    Hello,

First of all I appreciate that you tried to loose weight with your full efforts, but the sudden weight gain and bleeding is definitely a side effect of the steroids. The steroids should always be taken after consulting the doctor.

But as it has already been done, you should consult the doctor now, he can provide you the medicines which can kill the steroids effect and you will be start losing weight too.

And after that you can join some gym too, with a personal trainer.

    Thanks
    Evelyn

Thanks! The shot is finally wearing off because the pain is definitely back in my hip. Now that I realize what kind of side effects it has, I will endure the pain rather than the bruising, bleeding, and weight gain!

RE: Why can't I lose weight?

I need to see a accurate food chart, go into google, print out a blank chart from now until friday document everything you consume, add if you add salt or if there is cheese or fried food, then let me know about your exercise plan n if so how many calories are you burning per workout.
