I scratch my legs so hard they bleed

For as long as I can remember, my legs have been itchy. Usually, it's more noticeable on a night. However, I also notice intense itching after shaving (even with a brand new razor and sensitive foam) and during temperature change, for example if I was outside in the cold and came into a warm home). In the last year, it seems to have gotten worse. The itching is so bad, I scratch at my legs until I leave scratch marks all over them and sometimes they even bleed. My legs look horrible some mornings after a night of scratching (on occasion I've done it without being aware, during sleep). It looks like I self harm sometimes when it's really bad.

I've tried washing in aqueous cream, moisturizing with coconut oil or bathing in it, I've recently been using Doublebase Gel as a moisturiser. I've stopped using fake tan, I very rarely use bath bubbles or anything that could irritate my skin...I don't know what else to try. The ONLY thing I could think of is that I have my shower too hot - i know I do. But surely this can't account for how bad it gets? Plus, I can scratch really bad when I haven't recently showered. I also scratch regardless of whether I'm in my own bed or my boyfriends.

I've debated going to the doctors about this but it's been going on for so long I've just put up with it. Any suggestions?

RE: I scratch my legs so hard they bleed

Is it only your legs? No other part of your body itches like that?

Probably the best thing you can do is see a dermatologist. They might have seen something similar or know of what can cause itching like that. I've had bouts of itching to the point I scratch my skin raw -- I've had eczema since I was very young and a flare up can cause things similar to what you describe though mine is normally on my hands.

What happens if you stop shaving for two weeks

Could be an allergic reaction to the nickel in the razor blades

RE: I scratch my legs so hard they bleed

The first thing to do is ensure you do not have any scents in any products you use on your body or that you breathe in. After you have ensured all cleaning products and soaps, etc have be removed then make sure you moisturize your skin daily with something that does not have any scents. Also make sure all your bedding has been completely cleaned and dried without any scents products and your bedroom is also scent free. With fresh air and unscented surroundings you should have a much better sleep and the itching should be reduced. If that doesn't help it could be in one or more of the foods you are eating. My itching was caused by glutamine in my food. It took over 6 months to remove it all including the vitamins but now the itching is almost gone one year later. Hope this helps.
