Lips swell after eating some foods like carrots and canteloupe...allergic?

    Hello,
I am nineteen years old and for most of my teenage years, I have noticed that my lips swell and develop small red bumps when I eat certain foods. This happens with carrots, watermelon, canteloupe, honeydew, bananas, and sometimes strange foods like mushrooms. I try to avoid eating these foods as much as possible but I love most of them, so I fall victim to it quite often. The red bumps appear within minutes and sometimes my throat feels itchy (not tight). Is there a common factor within all of these foods, or a certain condition that causes this? I don't have any other known allergies and have never visited with an allergy specialist. Thanks for any information-- I am very curious!

RE: Lips swell after eating some foods like carrots and canteloupe...allergic?

Years ago, my son was tested for allergies and was found to have allergies to many types of plants including most trees and grass types. The allergist gave a list of these allergens and then a second list. The 2nd list was of foods that might cause allergy-like symptoms such as swollen lips, scratchy throat and so on. My son was not allergic to these foods, the doctor said, but molecules from specific foods were sufficiently similar to things he was allergic to, to cause an allergic-type reaction. It sounds like you're having this allergic-like reaction. But I no longer recall which foods cause this "synergistic" reaction and what non-food items they are linked to. If you were my daughter I would definitely take you to an allergist for testing. It's possible you will never have anything more serious than itchy throat. But it's also possible you have a true allergy that could cause a lot more trouble. So a visit to an allergist is a good idea.

It sounds like oral allergy syndrome. It is a cross sensitivity to pollen. Some people find that they can eat it if the skin is peeled or if the fruit is completely cooked, but some (including myself) have too severe of an allergic reaction to eat the fruit at all. I have been living with it for years now so if you have questions I can try and answer them.

Oral Allergy Syndrome is correct. I have never been tested but have read enough about it, and finally got to explain to the doubting people that I really had been allergic to all these things all along. I have reactions to all of the items that you listed and then some. Canteloupe is by far my worst and I quit eating it and most fruits years ago. I finally figured out (20 years later) that if I stay on allergy medicine or take a Claritin ReadyTab prior to eating the culprit, the allergic response is greatly reduced or goes away altogether. That said, I still do not eat most of those fruits (and/or raw vegetables) often at all anymore after so many years of reactions. Try the Ready Tab and then take a bite or two of something that you know you always have a reaction to. You may be pleasantly surprised.
