    RE: cat age

I've always heard a cat is an adult at 1 year, but I'm not sure if that differs by breed.

Although female cats can begin their heat cycles as early as 5-6 months of age, they are not considered adult until about 1-1 1/2 years of age.
Most veterinarians will recommend that they stay on kitten food at least until the age of 8 months, sometimes longer - depends on your veterinarian who will factor in the cats age, weight gain, activity, etc. (kitten food is higher in carbs, fat, calories, etc. and can cause premature weight gain in less active kittens).
